What does high-density EEG offer?
EEG records potential differences at the scalp. Adding electrodes increases spatial sampling of that surface: signal variations are observed at more locations. Head coverage and sensor distribution matter as much as the stated count.
High-density EEG can support topographic and source-localisation analyses. It does not turn a recording into a direct image of deep structures. Data quality, sensor positions, the head model and computational methods affect interpretation. Request EGI documentation from Gaze Intelligence →
64, 128 or 256 channels: start with the scientific question
To prepare an acquisition, first describe the phenomena to study: evoked responses, spontaneous activity, task comparisons or stimulation combinations. Then define coverage and planned analyses. A high channel count may be relevant, but also increases preparation, monitoring and processing needs.
Compare complete configurations. Ask what is included for electrode localisation, event management, software and accessories. Two offers with the same channel count may involve very different workflows.
Saline or gel net: consider the whole session
Net selection should consider preparation time, recording duration, comfort, cleaning and contact maintenance. Behaviour depends on the net model, participant and environment. A demonstration should reproduce a realistic session, not just the first few minutes of fitting.
Plan the sizes needed for your population and daily participant numbers. Consider consumable replacement, preparation between sessions and storage. These details directly affect your team's ability to use the system regularly.
Build reproducible quality control
- Check contact quality and identify problematic channels before the task.
- Keep acquisition settings, markers and session notes.
- Define exclusion and processing criteria before comparing conditions.
- Test export to the analysis software actually used by the team.
- Plan a representative pilot with expected movements and durations.
Plan for EEG–TMS and EEG–fNIRS combinations
Combining modalities means more than placing two devices on one person. Mechanical fit, interfaces and artefacts must be checked. A standard EEG system does not become compatible with another modality simply by adding a cable.
Magstim EGI presents GES 500 as an EEG platform with options for combination with TMS. See our EGI systems page to review ranges and configurations, then our synchronisation page to plan events and streams.
Information needed for an EEG quotation
Describe the population, session duration, planned analyses and other laboratory devices. Specify whether the budget should include installation, training, several net sizes and software. Ask for a proposal separating essential equipment from expansion options.
At Gaze Intelligence, this discussion connects equipment selection with actual conditions of use. It also defines what should be validated during a demonstration before finalising a configuration.
